Gold prices rose slightly on Thursday, after posting notable gains of 4.2% in the previous session, but they continue to fluctuate near the $4,300 level. If gold manages to break $4,300, it could hit a significant rise toward the second resistance level at $4,341. On the downside, if the price falls below the broken bullish channel’s upper line, it could test support levels near $4,204 then $4,167.

Global markets remained on edge on Thursday as geopolitical developments in the Middle East continued to shape investor sentiment. Reports that Iran and Oman are in the final stages of an agreement on navigation through the Strait of Hormuz, alongside ongoing uncertainty surrounding negotiations over Iran’s nuclear program, fueled cautious trading across financial markets. As a result, Brent crude traded below the $80-per-barrel mark, while the U.S. dollar fluctuated as investors assessed the potential implications for energy supplies, inflation, and the broader global economic outlook.

Market Watch

Iran: Agreement with Oman on the Strait of Hormuz in Final Stages

Iran’s Foreign Ministry announced on Thursday that its agreement with the Sultanate of Oman regarding navigation arrangements in the Strait of Hormuz has entered its final stages of review and drafting. The ministry said a joint statement will be released once the remaining procedural steps are completed, provided there is no external interference.

Foreign Ministry spokesperson Esmaeil Baghaei stated that the two sides have reached an understanding of the geographical coordinates of the designated shipping route after completing technical, legal, security, and environmental assessments related to the project. He added that the agreement does not necessarily mean that the Strait of Hormuz is entirely secure, noting that maritime security depends on broader regional and international factors.

Meanwhile, Iranian Deputy Foreign Minister Kazem Gharib Abadi said the understanding with Oman includes new arrangements for inbound and outbound shipping lanes, describing the agreement as “a new model” for managing navigation through the Strait of Hormuz. He added that consultations are continuing to complete the formal approval process before the final announcement.

Brent Crude Trades Below $80 Per Barrel

Brent crude oil traded below the $80 per barrel mark on Thursday as investors monitored developments surrounding talks between Iran and Oman on navigation through the Strait of Hormuz, while also assessing their potential impact on global oil supplies.

Brent crude was trading at around $79.9 per barrel in early trading, as optimism over progress in the Hormuz negotiations eased concerns about potential disruptions to oil flows from the Gulf region, putting downward pressure on prices and keeping the benchmark below the $80 threshold.

However, ongoing geopolitical uncertainty and concerns over maritime security in the region limited further losses, with market participants continuing to watch for developments that could influence the global balance of oil supply and demand in the coming weeks.

Dollar Fluctuates Amid Concerns Over the Iranian Nuclear Deal

The U.S. dollar traded unevenly on Thursday as investors closely monitored developments surrounding negotiations over the Iranian nuclear deal, with uncertainty over the future of the talks and their potential impact on global energy markets and the broader economy weighing on market sentiment. The uncertainty prevented the dollar from establishing a clear direction, resulting in cautious trading across currency markets.

The U.S. Dollar Index edged slightly lower during the session as investors reassessed their positions following reports that diplomatic discussions on Iran’s nuclear program remain ongoing. Market participants are evaluating the potential implications of any agreement, including possible changes to sanctions on Tehran and the country’s oil export levels. Fluctuations in crude oil prices also contributed to increased volatility in foreign exchange markets.

Meanwhile, traders are awaiting upcoming U.S. economic data and comments from Federal Reserve officials for further guidance on the outlook for interest rates. At the same time, geopolitical developments in the Middle East continue to play a significant role in shaping movements in the U.S. dollar and global financial markets.

Looking Ahead

Markets are also awaiting the release of the latest U.S. Initial Jobless Claims data, a key indicator of labor market conditions that could provide fresh clues about the strength of the U.S. economy. Investors will closely analyze the figures for signs of cooling employment trends, as the results may influence expectations for the Federal Reserve’s monetary policy path. A stronger-than-expected labor market could reinforce the case for keeping interest rates elevated for longer, while weaker data may increase expectations of future policy easing, potentially affecting the U.S. dollar, Treasury yields, and global financial markets.
